What Is a Differential Override? Hierarchy Commissions Explained

Override commission is the income an upline earns on the business their downline writes. In insurance hierarchies, the most common structure is the differential override, sometimes called a rolling override, and understanding it is the difference between trusting your comp and guessing at it.

The core idea: everyone earns the spread

In a differential model, each level in the hierarchy earns the difference between their comp level and the level directly below them. The writing agent earns their street rate; everyone above earns the spread between their rate and the highest rate beneath them.

Because each spread stacks on the one below it, the total paid out equals the top-of-hierarchy rate. Nothing is double-counted, and nobody earns a negative override even if comp is compressed.

A worked example

Say a policy has $1,730 in annualized premium, and the contracted chain is: writing agent at 21% (Street), their upline at 26% (GA), and the agency at 30% (MGA).

The writing agent earns 21%, their street commission. The GA earns the spread over the agent: 26% − 21% = 5%, which is about $86 on this policy. The MGA earns the spread over the GA: 30% − 26% = 4%, about $69. Add it up: 21% + 5% + 4% = 30%, and the whole thing equals the top rate. Every dollar is accounted for, and each level’s override is exactly their differential.

Where it gets tricky

Two things break naive spreadsheets. First, comp compression: if an intermediate upline is contracted below the level beneath them, their override should be zero, not negative. The differential floors at zero and the next real spread rolls up. Second, LOA business: when a downline agent is licensed-only, the overrides are distributed internally by the agency instead of paid by the carrier, but the differential math is identical.

AgencyGrid computes these cascades automatically from your comp grid and agent hierarchy, including compression and LOA settlement, so you see projected override income per agent and across the whole organization without touching a formula.
